Award winning Brisbane firm, Shaun Lockyer Architects (SLa) maintains a real focus on designing “memorable, sustainable and efficient design solutions” that enrich the lives of those who call it home. Easy living is clearly seen throughout this Queensland home – working very closely with Lockyer throughout the entire process, the homeowners wanted to create a space that would embody their lifestyle and daily routine.

True to Shaun Lockyer style, this inner-city cottage has been updated in a way that melds minimalism and classic charm together. A new modern extension utilising natural materials pushes a breath of fresh air throughout this pre-war building, whilst calculated voids create an overall spacious and modern home.

mafi flooring was selected in Oak Country Brushed Natural Oil for the entire ground level including living, dining and kitchen areas. mafi was followed through into bulkheads and bed heads.

High ceilings and symmetrical features give the interior and exterior of the building an open and structured appearance. Windows have been  used to frame parts of the house and highlight the use of timber and black cladding.

The natural knots and crack lines that are characteristic of mafi Oak Country natural boards tie in with the black cabinetry and the balustrades throughout the two levelled space.

Mafi timber boards were installed on the underside of the second level, creating a ceiling that effectively mirrors the Oak Country floor in the kitchen. The use of natural timber in this application brings the kitchen area into its own, creating a warm and inviting space for the owners to sit, eat and read the paper.

In the heart of Brisbane’s bustling New Farm, the home is understated and boasts a pleasant street view. Lockyer has introduced plenty of natural light offering glimpses of the sky through thoughtfully positioned sky lights and windows.
