Classic and contemporary never looked so good
Located in Balmain in Sydney’s Inner West, the owners of this recently converted terrace teamed up with Darren Woodman of Woodman Architects to create a spectacularly light and airy home. Classic elements of the existing terrace were maintained and a Scandinavian inspired theme was beautifully integrated.
With an appreciation for the ornate attributes that Victorian terraces typically contain, the owners wanted to keep the high ceilings, skirtings, cornices, ceiling roses and iron lace. Simple, contemporary features including Mafi timber floors and thin steel industrial doors and windows were incorporated to enhance the space.
The homeowners selected Mafi timber due to the beautiful oil finishes available and the high quality of the solid three-layer boards. In addition to the clean aesthetic, the primary reason for choosing Mafi was to achieve a natural and healthy home, without harmful lacquer or toxins.
“Without exception, everyone commented on how amazing the Mafi floor looked.”
Mafi Larch Brushed White Oil was selected for it’s unique surface appearance. The light colour and striking grain that is characteristic of mafi’s Austrian Larch plays in wonderfully with the minimalistic Scandinavian design, “it complemented the clean and crisp aesthetic we were after and brought a lot more light into a normally dark terrace layout”.
When asked where the owners drew their inspiration from, they referred to the likes of Ilse Crawford, Alvar Aalto, Anouska Hempel, Ian Schrager and one of their favourite Instagram accounts… Fantastic Frank.
We think this project is superb and we love seeing our Larch floorboards make a positive impact within the home! Well done to Josh & Lucy.
