Here at mafi, one question we are frequently asked is “In which direction do you lay the floorboards?” Well, it’s something that comes down to personal taste and there’s no right or wrong answer. The main consideration is the space that you’re working in. So to make life easier for you, here are a few hints from a couple of people in the know.

“The best advice we can give to our clients is to try a few layouts before the installation. You can do this by first laying the boards out running across the length of the space and following up by trying them across the width of the space. It can be difficult to visualise when you have an empty canvas, so by doing this our clients tend to find it much easier to make a decision.”

“The way I tend to make the floor board direction decision is in a narrow space that I want to enhance width I would lay them across the width of the room. If I want to make a space feel longer I run them down the length.”

“I also like to wrap them up walls and direction needs to be carefully considered as the boards should flow up the wall, not change direction. The only exception to this is in a traditional space like a Victorian room. Here I would run them in the original direction which is generally down a long hallway and not across it.”
